Enabling Datacenter Load Growth at Lower Cost Through More Efficient Use of the Existing Grid

Columbus, Licking County and the greater New Albany region have become an epicenter of America’s future economic growth. The area is now home to one of the world’s largest concentrations of hyperscale data centers, as well critical strategic manufacturing and industrial development. These investments are bringing jobs and long-term growth to Central Ohio while also creating an unprecedented need to expand the electricity generation and delivery network.

Now under construction, the Flint Grid Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) is strategically located at a major substation in the middle of this datacenter and industrial cluster and is specifically designed to make better use of the existing electric grid while providing a local reliability resource that allows more critical datacenter load to be served without building any new transmission lines, thereby helping meet rapidly growing electricity demand while lowering costs for consumers. As a site that has been in development for years and has received all of the necessary permits from the state siting board, this technology solution can be deployed much more quickly than major new transmission lines or generation facilities, providing an important bridge solution that supports regional reliability and keeps the economy growing while longer-term infrastructure is planned, permitted, and built.

Located in Jersey Township and scheduled to be operational by late Spring 2027, Flint Grid’s first phase will provide a 200 MW / 5.3-hour battery energy storage system that is capable of storing more than 1 GWh of electricity and that will be able to respond to changing grid conditions in milliseconds, providing immediate electricity where and when it is needed with a highly flexible resource that is able to keep the grid in balance throughout the year. Eolian first began developing Flint Grid in 2018, anticipating a need to meet the area's growing grid constraints as some of the region’s first datacenters were being constructed, well before today’s surge in electricity demand gained national attention.

Flint Grid Highlights

● The largest battery energy storage (BESS) resource to be constructed to date in Ohio and the PJM electricity market. Flint Grid’s first phase is a 200 MW / 5.3-hour BESS project that will provide more than 1 GWh of electricity storage capacity and able to respond to grid fluctuations in less than a second. 

● Located in Jersey Township, Licking County, Ohio, in the middle of the New Albany data center / advanced manufacturing / industrial load corridor; Flint Grid is strategically sited and specifically designed to connect to one of the region’s most critical load-serving substations and to be fully operational before Summer 2027 to address the area’s unprecedented electricity demand growth and the need for new capacity as seen by recent PJM auction results.  Flint Grid is the largest BESS unit to ever clear the PJM capacity auction, providing more than 50% of the entire BESS resource class in PJM's 2027 capacity year starting on June 1, 2027.

● Having begun development in 2018, Flint Grid is strategically positioned to help bridge the gap between today's rapidly growing electricity demand and the future transmission and generation projects under consideration and planning. By making more efficient use of existing transmission and grid infrastructure, the project helps improve regional reliability while lowering costs for Ohio electricity consumers.

Supporting Reliability Across PJM

 

PJM coordinates the movement of wholesale electricity across a multi-state region, including Ohio. Its capacity market helps ensure that enough resources will be available to meet future electricity demand and maintain grid reliability.

As the first large-scale battery energy storage project to qualify for the PJM capacity market and clear PJM’s 2027–2028 Residual Capacity Auction, Flint Grid accounts for more than half of all new battery storage capacity cleared for that capacity year. These milestones reflect the increasingly important role battery storage plays as electricity demand accelerates across the PJM region.

Due to how quickly battery storage can be developed and deployed as compared to many traditional infrastructure projects, it provides critical reliability support while new transmission and generation resources move through multi-year planning, permitting, and construction processes.

How Battery Storage Supports Reliable, Affordable Electricity

Reliable electricity depends on maintaining a constant balance between supply and demand.

As electricity demand grows faster than new transmission lines and generation can be built, battery energy storage provides a fast, flexible resource that helps bridge that gap. By storing electricity when it is abundant or lower-cost and delivering it when demand increases, battery storage makes better use of the existing electric grid, improves reliability, and helps lower costs for consumers.

Designed with Safety at the Forefront

Flint Grid was developed through Ohio's rigorous, state-led Ohio Power Siting Board review process, which evaluates proposed energy infrastructure through comprehensive engineering, environmental, safety, and community reviews before construction may begin. The project's approval reflects years of detailed analysis and compliance with Ohio's regulatory requirements.

Modern battery energy storage facilities are designed, constructed, and operated under stringent safety standards. Current-generation projects incorporate significant advances in battery chemistry, system design, monitoring, fire protection, and emergency-response planning. Flint Grid is designed to comply with National Fire Protection Association Standard 855, the leading U.S. safety standard governing stationary battery energy storage facilities.

Eolian has funded or developed more than 30 GW of operating energy infrastructure projects across the United States, including more than 4 GW of commercialized battery energy storage projects.
